New Resident Checklist: Everything You Need to Do When You Move to Tega Cay
When we moved to Tega Cay, we quickly realized there were a lot of little things to do. Between DMV visits, parking permits, local recommendations, and figuring out how much clay soil impacts gardening, it took a lot of searching around.

Things Every New Resident Should Do

Learn About Southern Gardening
One thing we underestimated after moving here? South Carolina yards are a whole different world.
The heat, humidity, weeds, clay soil, and fast-growing grass are no joke. We quickly learned that what worked in other states doesn’t always work here.
If you’re new to the area, spend a little time learning:
Common South Carolina weeds
Best grass types for the climate
When to water during the hot months
Which plants actually survive the humidity
How to prepare for pollen season
Trust us, it’ll save you a lot of time and money later.
Think Carefully About Outdoor Furniture
Another lesson we learned the hard way: outdoor furniture matters a lot more in the South.
Between humidity, rainstorms, pollen, and long summers, not everything holds up well here.
One of our biggest flops was buying outdoor furniture with built-in cushions. Every time it rained, the cushions stayed soaked for days.
If we could do it again, we’d look for:
Quick-dry or removable cushions
Weather-resistant materials
Covered storage options
Furniture designed for humid climates
Outdoor living is a huge part of life in Tega Cay, so it’s worth planning for the climate upfront.
